About
Maria Castro is Lecturer in Music Technology at the University of Huddersfield, UK, where she teaches Music and the Moving Image, Sound Design for Picture and Computer Composition. She studied Music at Royal Holloway College and was awarded a PhD in Composition by the University of London in 2006, having as external examiner David Toop. Her principal research interests lie in the interaction between music, sound and the moving image, and specifically the creative use of sound in film. She is particularly attracted to independent and World cinema, and non-conventional approaches to film sound and music. She has also a strong interest in East Asian film and intends to pursue further research on Japanese cinema.
Maria has worked in France and the UK as a free lance sound designer/composer for film, video art and documentary. She had projects with the London Film School, Royal Holloway College, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, and CinéArchives. Her work has been screened at international festivals in the UK, Canada, Germany, Italy, France, United States and Portugal. In 2004 she was one of the three finalists of the Volkswagen Score Competition for sound designers and composers at the Berlin International Film Festival. Recently she has collaborated with French sound director Daniel Deshays translating some of his work for international conferences as well as the article ʻStaging Sound: A Matter of Dissociationʼ, published in The Soundtrack journal, Volume 2.1, 2009.
